Rembrandt painted very few portaits of children. He preferred wrinkled faces, and his style later become too rough for a child's skin. But when he painted his own son he captured the nature of a pensive child perfectly. This world-famous painting was one of the most important purchase ever made for Museum Bijmans van Beuningen, in 1940, with support from the rembrandt Association and 120 private individuals.
