Garden of Rubenshuis (Rubens House) in Antwerpen, Belgium

In the very center of Antwerp is located the former house of one of the greatest painters of all time. The house of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) on the street Wapper 9-11 is known also for its garden, which is an integral part of the whole ensemble. The garden gives a special  charm of this complex, consisting of the building, which was intended for residential use by Rubens and his large family, directly related to the famous studio of the artist!

Peter Paul Rubens bought the building on the Wapper 9-11 in Antwerp in 1610, but he wanted to change completely its appearance and atmosphere. Rubenshuis (Rubens House) and garden were reconstructed on the idea and the desire of the artist in Renaissance-Baroque style influenced by Italian architectural style of Italian palaces (Palazzo). And this is not accidental, especially bearing in mind that Rubens lived and worked in Italy a certain period of his life. Rubenshuis was home to Rubens family for 29 years from 1611 until the death of the painter in 1640. After this period, the house changed owners several times, and in 1937 the city of Antwerp acquires ownership of the complex.

It's curious that after 1937 the garden of Rubenshuis had been completely redesigned by references to the Rubens's painting "The walk in the garden", part of the collection of the Alte Pinakothek, München, recreating in this way an horticultural data of 17th century botanical works. The garden has a typical internal gated Renaissance space, very typical for its time, with straight alleys for walking, with shaped small geometric areas for planting flowers, inevitably had and magnificently landscaped pergola, which is currently in a period of restoration, and naturally a little fountain. The different flower zones are surrounded by hedges. Part of the overall look of the garden is also the Pavilion which is at the bottom of the garden, located just frontally against the Renaissance style Portico, separated by a long straight alley. The Pavilion and Portico are decorated with impressive sculptures.

Today, the Rubenshuis museum is world renown for the name of the great painter Peter Paul Rubens, who was lived and created here some of his most remarkable masterpieces. For visitors to the Rubens's museum (Rubenshuis) in Antwerpen is an exceptional opportunity to make their short break in the charming garden after experiences that leaves them the visit of the house itself, also the world famous Grand Studio (Grand Atelier) of Rubens and his art school.
