Park Den Brandt in Middelheim Antwerpen, Belgium

In 1396, in a land registers, the name of today's Park Den Brandt (Het Ten Brande) was first mentioned as a name in a particular place land. This name comes from "de brande" and was given to this plot of land, probably because this piece of land has been scorched place. Before that, this same land has been wild and has covered with dense bushes, forests, briers, heather and ferns. The combustion was in order to release the land to handled and to convert agricultural land. A long time ago the main part of the land of Castle Den Brandt was within the area Wilrijk, and much of the terrain belonged to the eastern Wilrijk.

In the history of the mansion was originally a farm, later in this place there was a "gaming house" and finally around 1582, the estate Hof Ten Brande. Today's castle was built in 1790 in a Louis XVI style, influenced by the symbolism of the epoch, during the period when the previous building was destroyed. In 1806 the owner of the castle at the time Charles-Antoine della Faille de Waerloos (Charles Antoine Marie Hyacinthe della Faille, 1772-1818) appoint dhr. Fr. van de Perck as responsible for the gardens in Den Brandt. During this period has begun planning an English garden in the big park on the estate. Later, in 1870 are held a series of significant changes. The owner determines the places for lakes, flower gardens and green spaces, as well as a chapel, which is located in front of the mansion to the Beukenlaan Av. against Middelheimlaan. In front of the park was established the French garden with the typical for the French style of landscape architecture geometric forms. Last owners of Den Brandt becomes family Kreglinger in 1910 with acquired ownership on the castle and 16 ha park. Another part (48 hectares) of the Park Den Brandt was purchased by city government of Antwerp, in order to realize a new idea about the purpose of the park. When Kreglinger family owns the castle, specially for the beautiful park they bought the sculptural composition of the three graceful nymphs from the collection of World Exhibition in Brussels in 1910. In the French garden of the park, in a small fountain was installed the sculpture "The Dancing Nymphs" (The Three Graces) by famous sculptor Walter Schott (1861-1938). For the opening of the new park on May 7, 1911 the municipality of the Brandt had put a reproduction of the statue of "David" by Michelangelo. Many years later the municipality of the Antwerp on December 18, 1962 officially formed the documents of purchase the domain and castle from Kreglinger. At the rear of the park, in the English Garden, was built a small English cottage, called Gingerbread (de peperkoek), which fits into the landscape of the English garden as a romantic element. In the property has a fenced yard used to be a vegetable garden for the castle and for growing fruit.

Today, the splendid park areas are filled with new content designed primarily and accessible to public events and cultural activities. With its beautiful natural surroundings, greenery areas and gardens, the park of the castle Den Brandt is the best and most attractive place for summer festival Jazz Middelheim, one of the most famous jazz festivals and certainly in the top three in Europe. Established in 1969, initially the musical event was held in the stunning Nightingale Park, Antwerp, then was moved to the Middelheim Park among the sculptures. But these days, the festival now takes place in Park Den Brandt.

In 1991, the administration of Castle Den Brandt  remodeled the former summer residence and coach houses to serve for seminars, private and public events. The unique exterior of surrounding park, and interiors of the castle provide an exceptional atmosphere as a place for prestigious events, wedding celebrations and stylish festive occasions. The magnificent glades and gardens of the park Den Brandt are also a wonderful place for recreation and walks on weekends. The charm of the greenery and blooming flowers in spring and summer make you feel relaxed, and the incredible colors of ancient trees in the park in autumn are enchantingly impactful.
