Michelangelo’s “Madonna and Child” in Bruges, Belgium

Michelangelo Buonarroti and his statue "Madonna and Child" (1504-1505) in the Our Lady Church (Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk), Bruges, Belgium.

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564) was a sculptor, painter, architect, poet - one of the titans of the spirit from the Renaissance epoch!

Bruges in Belgium is one of the most visited cities in the country and an attractive place for many tourists with its remarkable cultural and historical monuments. Among them, however, has a unique sculptural work that should not be missed to see. This is "Madonna and Child" by Michelangelo! The only work of Michelangelo, which left Italy while lived the great sculptor. It still remains one of the very few masterpieces by Michelangelo, which can be seen outside his native Italy. There are only two places outside Italy, where you can see a sculptures by Michelangelo. These are the world's largest museums - the Louvre in Paris and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

"Madonna and Child" is the first sculpture by Michelangelo outside Italy who arrived in Bruges at the beginning of XVI century. It is given a special place for this fascinating statue in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges. Initially, the remarkable work was intended for the Pope's Piccolomini altar at the Cathedral of Siena, Italy. But, there have archival data to be considered that the brothers Jan and Alexander from family Mouscron of Bruges, traders of fabrics, buy the marble statue of Michelangelo and then donated it to the Church in Bruges, in 1514. Although over time the statue was leaving Belgium twice because of stormy and troublous events surrounding the French Revolution and the Second World War. After 1946, the magnificent statue of the "Madonna with Child" returned again in Bruges.

This compositional group differs from other statues of the Madonna and Child, where she usually holds the Child in her hands. Slightly elongated face of the Madonna, with a pensive look and downcast face image is present in the works of Michelangelo (like in Pieta). This is the chosen and beloved image of the renowned master of sculptural masterpieces for prosopopoeia of the spiritual purity of God's Mother. The smooth, soft oval line on the face of Madonna suggest us an almost otherworldly holiness and humility in its tranquil and contemplative pose, holding lightly her Son between the knees! And the Child lively and vigorously trying to be detached from the lap of his Mother. A so nice and warm almost daily scene, but in which can sense one internal predetermination…

The exquisite statue of the Madonna with Child, height 200 cm, sculptured from Carrara marble by the expressive, plastically technique of one of the greatest all time masters of sculpture, able to create through perfect flowing lines an impacting masterpieces, starting from a single monolithic block of marble! Sometimes, the contemporaries of the great Maestro was astonished and asked him how he manages to achieve this amazingly perfection of his works from one marble block! Sometimes, he gave the answer: it's only necessary to remove the excess! Here, this is the genius - to feel what is excess and take it! Then, there remains only the perfection! The eternally!
